Brief history of Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Resort at Pedregal
After moving to Cabo San Lucas in 1973, Manuel Diaz Rivera (Don Manuel) immediately knew this would be his new home – he was tired of Mexico City’s urban life. Quickly, be became intrigued by the land where Pedregal now sits. There, he saw the potential right away, since it had spectacular views of both the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez. Also, he knew the small fishing village of Cabo San Lucas would grow into a great tourist destination. And, he was right!
Don Manuel began developing 360 acres of land at the tip of the Baja peninsula, near El Arco de Cabo San Lucas: The arch that marks Lands End. There, he transformed it into an upscale neighborhood called Pedregal de Cabo San Lucas. Then, three decades later, he developed this now-gated community into the most exclusive neighborhood in Cabo San Lucas. But, he still hadn’t touched the best piece of land in the parcel that he and his family had originally purchased – the land where Pedregal now sits.
Saving the best for last, Don Manuel finally built Pedregal on the final 24-acre cliff-side and beachfront piece of land. And what a great project that was!
Pedregal architectural design
Starting with the Dos Mares tunnel, which is the 900-foot tunnel that separates Cabo San Lucas from the Pacific Ocean, it provides quite a dramatic entrance into Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Resort at Pedregal. This tunnel was considered to be an “engineering feat” at the time it was constructed. And, it still causes awe and inspiration to those who appreciate what it took to build it.
Four respected design firms worked together to design the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Resort at Pedregal. Their goal was to build a community that is visually stunning, yet blends in with the natural environment. The design features Mexican-inspired styling and artwork.
As mentioned earlier, there were four design firms involved in the project. First, Nunzio DeSantis of HKS, Inc, created the architectural plans. Then, Paul Duesing Partners designed the interiors. Next, Sylvia Sepielli designed the spa. Finally, Charles S. McDaniel of the SWA Group created the landscape architecture. When you visit the Waldorf Astoria Los Cabos Resort at Pedregal, you’ll see that it all turned out splendid.
