Cabo San Lucas Safety: Is Cabo a safe place to travel in 2019?

One of the most frequent questions from our clients is: “how safe is Cabo San Lucas?”  So, after they fall in love with the beauty of Los Cabos, they decide to buy a house, condo or lot to build the home of their dreams.  Then, before making their purchase, they want to fully understand Cabo San Lucas safety and security.  So, how safe is this area on the southern tip of Baja California, Mexico?

Cabo San Lucas safety assurances

According to the Department of State of the United States, Mexico is at level-two alert.  To understand what this means, the Department of State has four Travel-Advisory Levels that they set based on crime and other statistics:

  1. Normal exercise precautions
  2. Exercise increased caution
  3. Reconsider travel
  4. Do not travel.

Other countries rated the same

In general, Mexico has a travel-advisory level of two. As shown above, level-two states:

“Exercise increased caution due to crime.”

Of course, other frequently-visited countries also rate in the second level of alert.  And, the countries that rate the same as the Cabo San Lucas safety rating include Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Netherlands, Serbia, Spain, United Kingdom, Belize, and Brazil.

Baja California Sur

Cabo San Lucas safety guidelines

Use toll roads when possible and avoid driving alone or at night.  In many Mexican states, police presence and emergency services are extremely limited outside of the capital or major cities.  This is not the case within Cabo San Lucas and all of Los Cabos.  But, the published guidelines, which make sense not only for Cabo San Lucas safety, but safety just about anywhere.  These rules are as follows:

  • Exercise increased caution when visiting local bars, nightclubs, and casinos
  • Do not display signs of wealth, such as wearing expensive watches or jewelry
  • Be extra vigilant when visiting banks or ATMs
  • Enroll in Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP)
    • Receive alerts
    • Help to locate you in an emergency
  • Follow the Department of State on Facebook and Twitter
  • Review the Crime and Safety Reports in Mexico
  • U.S. citizens who travel abroad should always have a contingency plan for emergency situations
  • Review the Traveler’s Checklist

Last year, a controversial report was issued by the Citizen Council for Public Safety and Criminal Justice A.C, which pointed to La Paz and Los Cabos among the 50 most violent cities in the world.  But, a few days ago, the report that corresponds to 2018 was released and both left the list.  This means Cabo San Lucas safety is good…just exercise increased caution.
